Understanding Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder. Instead of the round, flexible red blood cells that flow easily through the body, people with sickle cell disease have red blood cells shaped like a sickle, or the letter "C." These misshapen cells are rigid and can block blood flow, leading to pain crises, infections, and in serious cases, organ damage and stroke. Because the condition can also reduce the number of healthy red blood cells available to carry oxygen, it frequently leads to anaemia as well.


Sickle cell disease is passed down genetically, through genes inherited from both parents. Every person carries two copies of the relevant gene — one from each parent. This is what makes prenatal testing so important for couples who may be carriers.


How Sickle Cell Is Inherited

  • If a baby inherits the sickle cell gene change from both parents, the baby will have sickle cell disease (genotype SS).

  • If a baby inherits the gene change from only one parent, the baby will have sickle cell trait (genotype AS) — a carrier who does not have the disease itself and, in the vast majority of cases, will show no symptoms of it.

  • Sickle cell trait cannot turn into sickle cell disease later in life. The risk is only ever set at conception.


For couples where both partners carry the sickle cell trait (AS x AS), each pregnancy carries the following chances:

  • 75% (3 in 4) chance the baby will not have sickle cell disease

  • 50% (1 in 2) chance the baby will have sickle cell trait (a carrier, like the parents)

  • 25% (1 in 4) chance the baby will have sickle cell disease

  • 25% (1 in 4) chance the baby will have neither the disease nor the trait

If both partners already have sickle cell disease themselves (SS x SS), every child will be born with sickle cell disease.

What Is Sickle Cell NIPT?
